Advancing Health Literacy

West Fresno Family Resource Center (WFFRC) with the City of Fresno and partner community-based organizations is implementing the Advancing Health Literacy project to enhance equitable community responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health, the project which focuses on health literacy, will reach community members and increase their understanding of health-related concepts, decrease poor communication between adults and their health care providers, and empower adults to be more involved in decisions about their health. Additionally, the project is also intended on improving adherence to COVID-19 public health practices and vaccination rates, specifically among with high-risk and underserved racial and ethnic minority communities in urban Fresno, ranging from African American, Punjabi Sikh, Hmong to Latinx and Arabic communities, from 20 different cultures and languages. The services operate from a grassroots approach utilizing trusted, culturally competent community outreach workers and educators with the following partnering (5) Community Based Organizations which have been imbedded in these communities:

West Fresno Family Resource Center (Co-lead)

Centro La Familia Advocacy Services (Co-lead)

Jakara Movement

 Fresno Interdenominational Refugee Ministries

 Reading and Beyond

The project is utilizing the Minority Serving Institution, Fresno State’s Central Valley Health Policy Institute for ongoing quality improvement and evaluation to show that the project has directly impacted these communities in a positive way, buffering the impact of the pandemic through improved health literacy.
